Hmmm. What I'm observing is that the usb disconnect never seems to trigger an unmount. How long should it take for the kernel to realize the device is really dead? I waited for several minutes and it was still lingering -- that seems odd

Is hotplug normally responsible for the unmount (on a fully installed system)?

Note that the kernel seems to be aware that the underlying block device is no longer available (see: "rejecting command to dead device" in the syslog). Does it log this even while retrying?
