Kernel can't fail much faster. The scsi and USB subsystems have a natural timeout for all devices (USB falls under the scsi subsystem), just in case things are just a little quirky, but not seriously broken.

The failure actually happens very quickly, but the scsi subsystem will retry a few times before giving up. We don't want to change this behavior as it can cause devices to fail to easily in other cirumstances.
