Hi,

I have since changed SCSI card (in an attempt to rule out the H/W).
So I am now using an Adaptec AVA-2904 (simpler card than the AHA 2940, it doesn't have a BIOS). The chip on the board is stamped as "Adaptec AIC-7856T".
The symptoms are still 100% the same with either card: /dev/sg0 does exist upon resume from suspend to disk, but xsane hangs when trying to detect the available devices.

lspci reports:
0000:01:02.0 SCSI storage controller: Adaptec AHA-7850 (rev 03)

lspci -n report:
0000:01:02.0 0100: 9004:5078 (rev 03)

It doesn't quite match the actual chip on the card: 7850 not 7856T, might be a problem ?
