I am adding a comment to support the claim that this is a bug. I tried to
install Ubuntu (both 5.04 and 5.10) with my BENQ DW 1640 drive, and had it fail
when trying to load IDE modules from the disk. I used an older CD drive to do
the install and it went off without a hitch. I have yet to enable DMA on my BENQ
drive in Ubuntu, but so far I'm unable to do anyhting with it, for example when
I tried to play a DVD with xine it simply caused xine to freeze.
