I also have a similar (if not identical) problem. I got a new system (Athlon64
3000), so I tried Ubuntu in hopes that it would offer better hardware detection
than Debian Sarge, which I was running before. When installing, however, the
"loading drivers for CD-ROMS" phase, immediately after choosing your keyboard
layout, stops at 86% (loading "CD-ROM IDE"). I tried booting with
"acpi=off noacpi",

"install cd-rom-detect/cdrom_hdparm=-d1",

and mucking around in expert mode, attempting to use Rainer Größlinger's
solution of entering "hdparm -d 1 /dev/hda". I could not see any screen that
says "check and mount CD drives" before my computer tries to load the CD-ROM IDE
driver, so I entered the line as an argument pertaining to the CD-ROM IDE
driver. Needless to say, it didn't work. Was there any other workaround method
I missed? I suppose I could flash my CD-ROM firmware to the latest revision,
but it seems that that solution would not solve the underlying problem.
Thanks in advance,
Dylan
