system has Intel P4 2.4GHz and 1GB RAM

following screen output transcribed by hand:
RAMDISK: ran out of compressed data
invalid compressed data  (err=1)
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)

modules package is linux-restriced-modules-2.6.12-9-686

boot on regular 386 kernel from same grub installations runs routinely; 686
kernels in other distros have run routinely
