I am running Dapper Flight2 with updates on a Dell Inspiron 9300 with Intel 2915
wireless. My system is unstable whenever I have the wireless turned on.
The symptoms:
1) Gnome Network Applet shows wireless interface disconnected.
2) Gnome can't launch a terminal or other program. Window list just says
"starting xxxxxx" and then the window goes away.
3) Any open terminal locks as soon as I try to interact with the ipw2000 module.
rmmod, ifdown, etc.
4) Switch to console with CTRL ALT Fx and the console is blank.
5) Can't reboot when selected from logout menu
6) CTRL ALT BACKSPACE and then CTRL ALT DEL seems to cleanly shutdown.
With the introducution of the Dapper 2.6.15 kernels I had to switch the
wpa_supplicant commandline from -Dipw to -Dwext. The -Dipw interface will not
let me use crypto. So now I have a two new codepaths: the 2.6.15 kernel and the
-Dwext interface in wpa_supplicant. ipw2200 using WPA-psk and -Dipw under
breezy was working nicely although I had to install the ipw2200 firmware and
recompile ieee80211/ipw2200.
