Can you disable the auto enabling of that ipw2200 (comment out wlan0 or whatever
for "auto wlan0").

When you boot, switch directly to console, and do:

sudo ifup wlan0

If it freezes that command, use the tips here for debugging a crash (especially
the SysRQ stuff):
