Sure thing. I've gone one further, and am including the dmesg and kern.log from when
it does work too.

As this is a laptop, it's somewhat tricky to tell re: monitor sync, so i hooked up
and external monitor, and here's the behaviour:

1) on the 'good' kernel, the external monitor is blank until X loads. After that,
if i switch to the console, it works just fine.
2) on the 'bad' kernel, the external monitor is blank until X loads. Switching
to the console afterwards just makes it lose sync.
