The out of sync is what I was expecting. Sure enough, vgafb16 isn't used on the
"working" setup, so there you are just getting a standard text console.

The vga16fb is setting a bad mode for your laptop, and even worse is so bad it
doesn't work for a standard CRT.

Here's what I need you to do, and it will require you to work blind. First
install the fbset package. After booting the broken kernel, switch to the
console and login (just pretend :). Then type this command:

fbset > fbset.txt

Then send that file. It will tell us the resolution and h/v frequencies that are
set by the vga16fb.
