Title:
Kernel panic on reboot after installation

Status in grub2 package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
I'm a new Ubuntu user. I had trouble with kernel panic on booting
after fresh installation (on normal IDE hard disk, not a VM install).
  The error looked like this:

Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)
Pid: 1, comm: swapper Not tainted 2.6.35-22-generic #33-Ubuntu
  Call Trace:
  ? printk+0x2d/0x35

  kernel_init+0x18e/0x19d
  ? kernel_init+0x0/0x19d

My problem has already been solved thanks to this forum post:
  http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/ubuntu-63/kernel-panic-on-maverick-842569/#post4150307
After changing the root=UUID... in the boot line to root=/dev/sha1, Ubuntu was able to boot properly.

It seems to me like there's something wrong with what creates the
initial boot line. I'm new and nearly turned away after trying to
install several times and also trying various other tips from forums.
It would be good to fix this.

Please keep up your good work!
