Are you still able to reproduce this with 14.04?  If so, please type
"ls" at the grub rescue prompt and report the results.

Title:
  Grub with AHCI in BIOS SATA CONTROLLER Mode fails

Status in “grub-installer” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  ---------- ORIGINAL ENVIRONMENT:
  Acer Travel Mate 7730G 
  INTEL 2 DUO CPU 22 
  2 x HD WDCWD3200BEVT-222CTO
  BIOS V0.3416
  Standard Mode by default of the BIOS for SATA CONTROLLER MODE = AHCI
  BIOS boot sequence = CD/DVD, HD1, HD2, USB...............
  MS VISTA pre-installed.

  ----------- SEQUENCE OF ACTIONS:

   1 Unloaded UBUNTU 12.04 from official site,
   2 created ISO CD and ISO DVD,
   3 Loaded CD in automatic dualboot,
   4 HD system restarted goes in grub error: "error no such device: .........................................................."   "grub rescue ?",
   5 changed in BIOS SATA CONTROLLER MODE from AHCI to IDE,
   6 HD system restarted for UBUNTU 12.04 works normally.

   ------------ PROBLEMS RELATED:

   1 the UBUNTU system works only in  BIOS SATA CONTROLLER MODE = IDE (Best performing mode is AHCI)
   2 the UBUNTU boot from CD/DVD works only with CD (THE DVD IS NOT RECOGNIZED)
   3 The dual boot of MS Vista goes into error
