Dimitri,
It wouldn't be pointless if you already had the Desktop image, then it would quite nice to be able to install the mini.iso (maybe even server.iso) from the desktop image without having to download a new image and write it to a new CD/USB.

Status in “ubiquity” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  In the installer you can press F6 to get an option to install "free
  software only".

  I would like there to be an option "Ubuntu Core only" that installs only the Ubuntu Core packages.
  Basically kernel, sh, and apt.
