Problem was related to a apt-cacher-ng bug seen here:

  14.04.1 preseed netinstall - progress is missing most of the time

Status in “debian-installer” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  When installing using a combination of iPXE (http enabled)+14.04 LTS
  preseed on vmware 5.0.0 the progress when fetching packages is not
  shown, a purple screen is shown instead until the installation reaches
  "Installing base system".

  The introduction of this bug seems to correlate with 14.04.1release
  date.

  The installation completes successfully, but the missing progress
  indicator might lead others to think that the installation has
  stalled.
