generic and virtual are the same kernel, the only thing that differs is
whether or not you pull in linux-image-extra-generic, which includes a
bunch more modules:
(base)adconrad at cthulhu:~$ apt-cache show linux-image-virtual | grep ^Depends
Depends: linux-image-3.11.0-6-generic
(base)adconrad at cthulhu:~$ apt-cache show linux-image-generic | grep ^Depends
Depends: linux-image-3.11.0-6-generic, linux-image-extra-3.11.0-6-generic, linux-firmware

Title:
All attempts at installing linux-virtual fail
Status in “debian-installer” package in Ubuntu:
Invalid
Bug description:
Boot 13.04 server iso, hit F4 to select minimal virtual machine,
double check minimal virtual machine selected, install as normal.
It keeps installing Linux-image-generic.
All attempts at installing linux-virtual afterward fail. It installs
and looks OK, but reboot, and you are on generic. Look in /boot, and
you will only find generic kernels. It does not install unpack and
install a linux-virtual kernel, no matter what you do.
I have spent plenty of time on this and explanations on the web vary
wildly, including some now believing that generic somehow is correct
for a virtual server image.
