saucy network configuration is behaving strangely. i've installed saucy
via netboot, selecting openssh-server only. saucy netboot found and
used my cable modem just fine, but the network configuration it
installed does not find my cable modem. precise works fine, so i
brought forward /etc/network/interfaces and /etc/udev/rules.d/70
-persistent-net.rules from precise. surprisingly, this didn't work.

details below. precise properly obtains an address for eth0 from the
cable modern. saucy doesn't, and inserts a bizarre local address
instead.

under precise, which works:
precise$ uname -a
