Can't really confirm on only current available nouveau machine (8600m
shutdowns - clean
restarts - a quick flash, hardly noticeable on the exit end however still happening for 1.5 -2 sec on the start up side right before the greeter loads.
See either a 'art deco' black & white stepped stair design or more often elements of previous windows & or the desktop, ect.

Bug description:
  As described, one sees a 'mosaic' of what's in vram instead of
  plymouth splash. Restarts take longer than usual with u-s-c so the
  disturbed screen may be mis-leading to users
