[Bug 1211807] [NEW] Mint 12 and 13 do not see any partition table entries during install (and do not allow making them)

Public bug reported:

Booting live CD for Mint 12 or 13 (same result) on HP Phoenix machine
with AMD 8 core 3.1 GHz and 8GB ram.

Shows a blank partition table (but the boot device is correct as
/dev/sda).

In a shell, fdisk works, as does gparted - I can add and delete
partitions. gdisk works as well, and I can create or delete GTA
partitions. None of these will be detected by ubiquity - deleting all
partitions using other tools works, but ubiquity does not see a
partition table and I cannot add there.

I tried partman by itself and it fails. All other partition managers
work normally.

I have (now) succesfully installed and booted Gentoo on this hardware on
the same settings (Legacy boot, UEFI disabled).

** Affects: ubiquity (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
