This bug was fixed in the package live-installer - 36ubuntu6

live-installer (36ubuntu6) quantal; urgency=low

  * Override the title template used by base-installer's kernel installation
    code.  Requires base-installer 1.122ubuntu11.
  * Don't try to copy the kernel image from the CD if the squashfs doesn't
    contain a kernel package (LP: #1049011).

Bug description:
  Quantal server iso's  20120911 i386 and amd64

   Both amd64 and i386 fail on a vm to install and go into a loop of
  complaining 'Unclean target file system' -> Installing the system
  (goes upto  'running partman-md') -> Ubuntu Installer main menu.
