installing libgio seems to remedy the problem. Skype and flash now
working after (from /var/log/apt/history.log) :

Start-Date: 2012-03-21 18:59:15
Commandline: aptdaemon role='role-commit-packages' sender=':1.80'
Install: libgio-fam:amd64 (2.22.0-0ubuntu1), gamin:amd64 (0.1.10-4, automatic), libgamin0:amd64 (0.1.10-4, automatic)
End-Date: 2012-03-21 18:59:22

Title:
whoopsie crashed with SIGSEGV in g_object_newv() after major updating
that appears to replace amd64 specific components with generics

Status in “whoopsie-daisy” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
Many components updated. Several components could not find the
updates automatically, but refreshing the cache in update manager then
allowed the update to proceed. After reboot I attempted to start the
amd64 Skype (which appears to be running).
