It turns out to be some bad CD RWs which are in good enough shape to
read / write / pass verification on some hardware but not on other
hardware.

Status in “ubiquity” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  Downloaded the install CD 
  http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/lubuntu/daily/20120304/precise-alternate-powerpc.iso

  Verified MD5 sum.

  Burned successfully to CD, verified

  Boots to yaboot but no further.  Must enter "install" manually, but it
  still does not boot.

  "if in doubt, just press Enter, and if that 
  doesn't work, type 'install video=ofonly'
