The resolvconf package is known to not be usable in 10.04. If you are seeing problems with it, you should remove it from your system.
The package works in 12.04 beta, but the changes are not backportable to lucid.
** Changed in: resolvconf (Ubuntu)
Status: Incomplete => Won't Fix

Settings dhcp in /etc/network/interfaces does not create
/etc/resolv.conf
Status in “resolvconf” package in Ubuntu:
Won't Fix
Bug description:
Binary package hint: ifupdown
(Lucid beta) When using dhcp configuration in /etc/network/interfaces,
the client receives an IP address, but can not resolve hostnames.
/etc/resolv.conf is missing.
For example
# The primary network interface
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp
Steps to reproduce:
- Boot Ubuntu
- /etc/resolv.conf is missing (and NFS shares like hostname:/ will not be mounted.)
