Public bug reported:

First I failed to do a full install of 12.04 LTS on a 250GB disk - Installer did not finish.
Change the disk for 160GB - same thing
Change the disk for a 40GB (over an old ubuntu 10.10 that worked) - same thing
So I went back one release and did a full install on the same 250GB disk used at first using Ubuntu 11.10.
It loaded the CD, downloaded a lot of stuff from the Internet, asked basic info from me, then continue "copy" until it crashed the same way as before.

The iso file used for the install is:
ubuntu-11.10-desktop-i386.iso

PS: I have successfully installed 1 Mandriva, 1 Debian server and 3
Ubuntus (8.04, 9.04 & 10.04 - desktop and server) so far, most on i386
but also one x64.
