You are probably right about the misconfiguration of
/etc/grub.d/windows.  My Dell Studio XPS is configured for dual boot to
Microsoft Windows 7.  If I want to boot to Windows, I press the Shift
key which brings up the menu and lets me choose Windows - if I do
nothing, it boots into Ubuntu Linux.  I don't recall exactly how I got
/etc/grub.d/windows, but it does boot properly to either Windows or to
Linux.  I've attached this very short file to this comment, but the
question is whether these error messages necessarily are related to the
problem I'm experiencing with linux-image-2.6.32-35-generic-pae not
updating properly.  I would think that once Linux has booted, grub and
its files are no longer active.  "Chris" who is helping me with related
Question #184950 submitted 1/16/2012 is recommending that I reinstall
Ubuntu from scratch, which I am willing to do, especially if there's a
possibility that anything might be corrupted.  I just want to make sure
before I do that to exhaust any other suggestions, especially if anyone
else would like me to try something before I reinstall anything, and to
make sure that /etc/grub.d/windows is not the source of the update
problem, as reinstalling would then not resolve anything.
