There is no reason to uninstall nvidia-common. It doesn't conflict with
the NVIDIA installer.

Status in “ubuntu-meta” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  The ubuntu-desktop package in Oneiric depends on nvidia-common. I
  wouldn't have a problem with this normally, but I usually uninstall
  nvidia-common to install NVIDIA's blob driver. When you try to
  uninstall nvidia-common it wants to uninstall ubuntu-desktop
