Sure enough, boot was clobbered even though the console said "no error
reported".
This time I was able to successfully use the "Boot-Repair" CD.

Title:
boot failure after sudo update grub sudo grub-install /dev/sda
Status in “grub2” package in Ubuntu:
New
Bug description:
Time after time on this Acer Aspire 5253 cannot boot after doing sudo update-grub sudo grub-install /dev/sda
All I get is a colored screen with four tiny little columns of black lines at the top. Will not boot.
Only recovery possible is to install into a different partition.
Install fixes the boot but of course lists the new install at the top
of the list instead of the precise pangolin I'm trying to test.
So what I did was a sudo update-grub and a sudo grub-install /dev/sda
as you can see in the console listing below.
Then I did ubuntu-bug grub2 maybe someone can see how the boot record
has gotten clobbered.
I'll reboot, verify the failure, then I have to do a new install
again! into a different partition to fix the boot.
