Public bug reported:

Time after time on this Acer Aspire 5253 cannot boot after doing sudo update-grub sudo grub-install /dev/sda
All I get is a colored screen with four tiny little columns of black lines at the top.  Will not boot.

Only recovery possible is to install into a different partition.
Install fixes the boot but of course lists the new install at the top of
the list instead of the precise pangolin I'm trying to test.

So what I did was a sudo update-grub and a sudo grub-install /dev/sda as
you can see in the console listing below.

Then I did ubuntu-bug grub2 maybe someone can see how the boot record
has gotten clobbered.

I'll reboot, verify the failure, then I have to do a new install again!
into a different partition to fix the boot.
