I just saw this in a Xen domU install too.  I suspect a regression in
the IPv6 branch.

  Expert install defaults to invalid hostname

Status in “netcfg” package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
  Running the expert install with D-I, it gives the first part of the IP
  address I entered during manual network configuration as the
  recommended hostname.  The installer should not allow, let alone
  recommend, invalid hostnames.  See attached screenshot.
