Unfortunately you have some sort of hardware problem. I would suggest
you check your harddisk. You could try to work around it by removing
/var/lib/dpkg/info/language-pack-gnome-en-base.list and trying to
reinstall that package.

dpkg: unrecoverable fatal error, aborting:

 reading files list for package 'language-pack-gnome-en-base':
Input/output error

** Changed in: dpkg (Ubuntu)
       Status: New => Invalid

Bug description:
  when updating to the new upgrade things did no go quite so well, had a few issues and this is one of them.
  i am just forwarding this on, hoping for a fix.
  i am using 11.04 currently trying to upgrade to 11.10.
  computer does not install new packages, i am not a guru with this o/s wanting to learn, i hope to upgrade.
