It appears to be an issue specific to the alternate CD. First guess says
this is something done differently in netcfg, but I haven't looked at
all yet.

As another option, we could start using the ifblacklist script in NM to
change /etc/network/interfaces when NM is installed (and revert when
it's removed).

  is unable to manage the ethernet card with network-manager. nm-applet
