Did gparted format on /dev/sda8, also an fsck which was clean, and
installed 27 July isohybrid booted from usb flash drive.
Went O.K. so I'm up and running fine. (for an Alpha 2).
I'm not about to try to create a bad superblock on /dev/sda8 as was
discovered in post #2 above to see if the problem will repeat. Curious
why it just didn't say it was having a problem with /dev/sda8 instead of
crashing....
