Back in Lucid multi-arch didn't exist in Ubuntu so firefox is
definitely 64bit on a 64bit system as there's no way to install the
32bit version on Ubuntu through the distro packages.

It's probably worth noting that the whole /lib32 and /lib64 is a
convention used on Red Hat systems but not on Debian based systems.

These directories may exist on an Ubuntu system but generally
shouldn't be used to know if a software is 32bit or 64bit.

The multi-arch way of doing that (since 11.04) is with
/lib/<arch-triplet/<library> for any library being Multi-Arch:same:

/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libnih.so.1.0.0: ELF 32-bit LSB shared object,
Intel 80386, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked,
