I don't know anything about tapes.
But know I consider that external USB drive with 1TB capacity are so
cheap, that I decided to use them for the same purpose, together with
clonezilla.
We are making an image of the server every week. 
We had to restore one time ; it worked very well.
For additionnal safety maybe you could use two such disks alternatively.
