Does /dev/hda5 exist?
sudo fdisk -l

/dev/hda5 2311 2434 996030 82 Linux swap / Solaris

If not create a new patition /dev/hda5 with gparted or fdisk

If the partion exists be sure that there are no data on.
sudo mkswap /dev/hda5

Then try
sudo swapon -a

Now the test
free -m
