Parental control & whitelisting in a classroom

What I eventually settled on (and what has worked very well for me) is
Safesquid (http://safesquid.com/) - they provide a browser-based graphic
interface and lots of tech support getting you over the initial learning
curve. You set up profiles which can include or exclude any users or
groups of users from any set of rules. And the software is free for (I
believe) up to ten users (it's based on users, not clients).
