creating fat 'thin' clients with ltsp new problem

I solved my LDAP problem and ran into a new one.
The fat client boots, but I never get to gdm. If I
switch over to tty1 I get a logon terminal and I can 
login as root. However I do not know what I can do
from here....any help or ideas out there?
