The better option would be to use the so called 'Alternate' installer 
which is a different ISO download. Even though the desktop cd has a 
run live cd option as well as a bare install option, it still is a gui 
installer which takes ram.

The Alternate installer iso is only a text based install and uses no 
gui. This is no problem because the stages and questions are pretty 
similar to the gui method. I have just installed five older (PIII) 128 
MB and 192 MB PCs with ubuntu alternate iso, no problem. Be careful 
obviously if you want to change the partitions to keep the existing xp 
installation. In my case it was easy I wanted the whole drive to be 
taken over by ubuntu.

As you may know, the 8.04 edubuntu is an 'add on' to ubuntu now.
