Problem with VPN connection (PPTP) to Internet-provider

It's not immediately clear why it didn't work, but it strikes me that there
might be a nice alternative way to achieve this.  

If you install the network-manager-pptp plugin and click on the network
manager icon it will have a VPN submenu.  You should (hopefully) be able to
pop all the data in there and enable/disable it using the network manager
applet.
