thats a pretty ugly way of doing it(especially since that will only work
for newly created users), rather add a system wide override file to
/usr/share/gconf/defaults/ (see the 20-edubuntu file as example for the
content)
sadly X_MODE is forcefully ignored by the xserver-xorg packages setup
script (it broke various autoconfiguration acpects, so teh X team didnt
want to enable it) in gutsy we our own X configration script which
introduces this parameter again, up to gutsy you can influence the
resolution with either a static xorg config file or with the hsync
vrefresh values in lts.conf.
