May this helps...

I wasn't able to run gcompris at all (LDM_DIRECTX=true).

I had always this errror messages in .xsession-errors:
    The program gcompris receiving  an X Window System error.
    This probably reflects a bug in the program.
    The error was 'XF86VidModelClientBotLocal'

Now I have preconfigured gcompris that the window doesn't run in full 
screen, since than gcompris is working.

Have tryed to run gcompris in window mode? May the performance is better?
