A lot of the people who'd usually be on #edubuntu are probably at the
Ubuntu developer summit.  You may have been unlucky.

If you launch the system monitor under system->administration you should be
able to click on the "processes" tab to see what process is using the full
cpu.  It would be worth figuring out what it is.

It's up to you but you're sort of putting off the inevitable.  Edgy is
supported for another 11 months after which you will need to upgrade.
Feisty does include a series of improvements.  If the upgrade didn't work
out well, it might still be worth installing feisty from scratch -- if you
have time.
