Hi Simon,
You could include birth-year or first-year-at-the-school in the username
to separate similar names. For example my username for some recently
completed postgraduate study was 'david.symons.02' (I started in 2002).

PS. This reminded me of a previous employment where 4 letter usernames
were used: the first 3 letters of the surname followed by the first
initial. So mine was "symd" for example.
However my then colleague Diane Turner wasn't too happy with her
prospective username ;-).
(she ended up getting "turn").
