I will, but there are some other problems that have come up that probably
have to be dealt with first:

At this point (probably due to some of yesterday's fiddling around), all of
my internet activity is going through ppp0 - but by way of eth1, not eth0
(watching the packet numbers and tracking through network tools makes that
very clear). The DSL modem cable is physically plugged into the NIC that is
NOT on the mother board and everything I can see in the config files (I'll
paste them below) tells me that eth1 should have a static ip address (I even
reinstalled firestarter and set eth0 as the internet connection and eth1 as
the lan), but ifconfig still tells me that dhcp is running both devices and
there is no static ip for eth1.
Can you figure out what it is that's controlling my settings? Here are the
files:

====================
[/etc/network/interfaces]
auto lo eth1 eth0
iface lo inet loopback

iface eth0 inet dhcp

auto dsl-provider
iface dsl-provider inet ppp
pre-up /sbin/ifconfig eth1 up # line maintained by pppoeconf
provider dsl-provider

iface eth1 inet static
address 192.168.0.254
netmask 255.255.255.0
network 192.168.0.0
broadcast 192.168.0.255
gateway 192.168.0.254

auto eth1
===================

under the "devices" tab in Network Tools, eth1 is configured with a static
ip,
ip 192.168.0.254
subnet mast 255.255.255.0

and eth 0 is left to DHCP

Now, here's the ifconfig -a:

In any case here's the lspci output:

I wonder if the problem is the "auto eth1" line at the end of interfaces -
do you have to reboot after making that change?
I appreciate all this,
David
