Not sure how useful this is James, but I got a bunch of old Compaq  
Deskpros to work only after I updated the BIOS. The HP/Compaq website  
has a comprehensive listing of updates, just check for your specific  
deskpro machine and run the relevant Rompaq as per the instructions  
on the site. As I say I don't know if this the cause of your problem,  
but I did have half-booting Compaq LTSP clients until I did a BIOS  
flash.
