Edubuntu Website

Jane et al,

I'm pretty much useless when it comes to Linux expertise, but I have
experience doing web design and CMS-like application programming. While
I couldn't be the main man for content-generation, I would be happy to
contribute to the Edubuntu movement by using some of my programming/web
design skills.

I have two CMS-like systems in a testing/production-ready stage. The
more feature rich system can be seen here:

http://www.chavezschools.org

Obviously since this is a live site I can't give out admin-side access,
but you can at least get an idea of what the public face is capable of.
There are static-content pages stored in the DB (for easy editing) and a
simple blog-like engine for posting news & notes. The security system
allows granulated access to different features (User 1 can only do A, B,
and C, but User 2 can only do A and C, if you know what I mean). It is
very easy to use and runs quite well. I code in Ruby on Rails
(http://www.rubyonrails.org) and prefer to rely on a PostgreSQL
backend. If there isn't an available server that could provide these, I
can easily setup some space on my host. I can't say that the system has
every bell and whistle that Drupal or Moin might feature, but I would
gladly work on custom components/features as the need comes up.

I can't commit to the project for ten years or anything, but I could
pledge at least 18 months. Rails code tends to be very easy to
understand and modify, and if it were necessary for someone else to
takeover the project I don't think it would be difficult. Especially in
a year or two when there are more Rails developers floating around.

All that being said, if the community wants to rely on a more proven
system like Drupal or Moin I would totally understand.

- Jeff
