Yes, as Oliver points out, default ubuntu flavours demands more than
what the LUG plans.

Edubuntu could work very well on those machines as thin clients.

However, I have successfully installed Edubuntu 'light' version, but via
a manual process.
This means:

 * I have netboot installed the old pcs (Live cd install won't run), but
that will install a minimal/server mode. (only command line)

 * Then, I have used APT to install Fluxbox or Ion2, XDM (not GDM), and
Abiword, Gnumeric, Gcompris (if PC has 64 MB... user must be
patient :) ) and a couple of other applications.
For web browsing, Firefox could be too much for old pc's. However,
'elinks', and 'dillo' can be an option. Also, there is a project (for
handhelds and PDA's) called 'minimo' which is a light-Firefox but I
guess that would mean to port it to x86.

I am sure that guys from Fluxbuntu could have much more to say about it
(#fluxbuntu).

Regards,
