Newbie Introductions

I am a fairly new Ubuntu user (about 6 months since I switched my laptop to
linux only), but I really like the way it looks/feels/works, and it has
encouraged me to switch to releasing all of my code under the GPL. (I only
write PHP as of now, but I'm hoping to branch out.)

My wife teaches a 2nd and 3rd grade inclusion classroom here in the states,
which is mainly 7 and 8 year olds. (inclusion meaning they have special
education and general education students in the same classroom.) Because of
this, I have an interest in improving the state of the educational system in
the US. I think that a good linux distro like edubuntu could make a big
difference.

The areas I hope to help is being what Scott Adams (dilbert) refers to as
"an idea rat". I'd love to help code, but since I only know PHP as of now,
I'm not sure what I can do, but I have tons of ideas I'd like to work on.
Some of these ideas include grading software for the teachers to keep track
of students' grades/assignments/attendance/etc. I would also like to see
easy-to-use math programs to generate math questions automagically based on
a teacher's critera, such as what skills are required to accomplish the
questions, and how many questions to use. It would be nice to let them print
it out along with a teacher's answer key.

Anyway, hopefully in the next few months her classroom will have a small
network of edubuntu computers, and I'll be able to provide feedback until I
learn more about linux software packaging and application development.
