In Mark's talk on Ubuntu at DebConf, which I highly recommend, he
explained some of his reasoning for creating Ubuntu rather than
working within Debian. Part of the reason, as I understand it, is so
that Ubuntu can make judicious compromises that Debian chooses not to,
such as packaging binary drivers.
Not making compromises on licenses pretty much defines the Debian
project, so one wouldn't expect Debian to let Squeak through. Ubuntu,
as I understand it, allows themselves to make compromises on a case by
case basis.
I think Squeak is a sufficiently unique and powerful learning tool
that it is worth overlooking the technical problems with its license.
That's just my opinion by the way, I don't have a role in the Edubuntu
decision process.
