Permissions seems to be incorrect, it is assigned to root group:

-rw-r----- 1 root root 1046 2006-03-04 20:23 /etc/shadow

I imagine it should be assigned to shadow group. I have changed it through SSH, I will test it when I come back to my home and give you more feedback.
