i use epiphany as the default browser and set this also in "prefered
applications" from system -> preferences and with sudo update-alternatives
--config x-www-browser. but when i want to read the logs from gossip, firefox opens.

i know, gossip isn't really responsible, but i didnt know where to fill the bug
instead.
